Transforming Blast Furnace Slag into Advanced Construction Materials

Amrize operates slag pelletizers on two blast furnaces in the Hamilton, Ontario area. The Blast Furnace slag undergoes a structural transformation as it is rapidly cooled from a liquid to a solid through a rapid quenching process, gaining cementitious properties.
The slag is then ground to a fine consistency at several of Amrize’s grinding facilities throughout Eastern Canada and shipped to Amrize’s customers as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), tradename NewCem or as blended cements (TerraFlow, etc.) to meet the desired requirements for the specific application.
Amrize’s pelletizer operations can also produce a lightweight aggregate for construction fill projects and lightweight concrete blocks. These Litex concrete blocks reduce transportation costs, improve sound insulation and provide enhanced fire resistance and thermal performance.
