Transforming Secondary Materials into Today's Infrastructure
Leading the evolution of slag-based materials – from steel mill co-product to sustainable construction cornerstone, that build communities across our nation.

Who We Are
Since 2001, the Canadian Slag Association (CanSlag) has promoted the use of Blast Furnace and Steel Furnace Slags. We include the biggest names in steelmaking, cement production and slag processing in Canada. Through research, technical exchanges and discussion, our members make Canadian industry more efficient by recycling by-products and reducing waste.
Our Mission
Phase 1
The association’s mission was attained:
- 100% of Blast Furnace Slag was being recycled.
- The end products are Pelletized and Granulated Slag which can be used as a direct replacement for Portland Cement.
- Pelletized Slag is also used as a lightweight aggregate
- Blast Furnace Slag is extensively used as an asphalt aggregate for roadways
Phase 2
Our next steps will be:
- Focused on ensuring Steel Furnace Slag reaches this level of recycling. Currently used extensively in Portland cement production and as an aggregate for unpaved roadways and parking lots.
- Focused on the widespread use of Steel Furnace Slag in Hot Mix Asphalt for road construction. A target for this application is the province of Ontario which is one of the few jurisdictions that is reluctant to such use.
Applications
Air-Cooled Blast Furnace Slag

From Byproduct to Building Block
Yesterday’s steel manufacturing byproducts are today’s construction innovation catalysts. Air-Cooled Blast Furnace Slag has evolved from a stockpiled material into a preferred, high-performance resource that strengthens our roads, buildings, and railways while supporting environmental applications across Canada.
Pelletized Blast Furnace Slag

Engineering Excellence Through Pelletization
Pelletized Blast Furnace Slag stands as a testament to modern material innovation. This specialized form combines lightweight efficiency with robust performance, delivering exceptional results across construction and infrastructure applications.
Granulated Blast Furnace Slag

Sustainable Strength: Granulated Innovation
Granulated Blast Furnace Slag represents the pinnacle of sustainable construction technology. Through precise granulation, we create a versatile material that not only enhances cement performance but also provides environmental benefits across construction and agricultural applications.
Steel Slag

Ultimate Strength Meets Versatility
Steel Slag embodies rugged durability and environmental responsibility in one powerful package. This exceptional material delivers superior performance across infrastructure projects while offering innovative solutions for environmental and agricultural applications.

Success Stories
Transforming Steel Slag into a Sustainable Agricultural Solution
Algoma Steel is transforming to an Electric Arc Furnace steel producer, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 70% and is Canada’s largest industrial decarburization project. Learn More About This Project
