Who Are We?
Since 2001, the Canadian Slag Association has promoted the use of Blast Furnace and Steel Furnace Slags. The association, commonly known as CanSlag, includes the biggest names in steelmaking, cement production and slag processing in Canada. Through research, technical exchanges and discussion, our members make Canadian industry more efficient by recycling by-products and reducing waste.

Our Mission
Phase 1
The association’s mission was attained:
- 100% of Blast Furnace Slag was being recycled.
- The end products are Pelletized and Granulated Slag which can be used as a direct replacement for Portland Cement.
- Pelletized Slag is also used as a lightweight aggregate
- Blast Furnace Slag is extensively used as an asphalt aggregate for roadways
Phase 2
Our next steps will be:
- Focused on ensuring Steel Furnace Slag reaches this level of recycling. Currently used extensively in Portland cement production and as an aggregate for unpaved roadways and parking lots.
- Focused on the widespread use of Steel Furnace Slag in Hot Mix Asphalt for road construction. A target for this application is the province of Ontario which is one of the few jurisdictions that is reluctant to such use.
